Moments to Savour

Why is it that few people relate their business life with their spiritual life? Do people feel that spiritually has no place in our commercial business world? Or is it just that we are so focused on running our business, our departments or our organizations that we feel that there is no time for such a sentimental approach to the hard tough world of business.

After all you now say…we have incorporated values into our mission statements. We expressly affirm that we will do business in an ethical way – What more can you want? After all if we have good values and ethics in our business – we don’t need anything else. Or do we?

Yet as it is through our thoughts that we create the world around us, our perceptions, beliefs and attitudes that colour our world, then there is no way that these same thoughts and words will not directly impact and create the business world that we each experience. So why do we not concentrate on these thoughts and beliefs to create the business world that we would prefer around us – a business world where things go smoothly, where we enjoy our work without feeling overwhelmed and undervalued. And where the business grows in all the ways we first envisioned.

Instead many of us seem to have created a world of stress and frantic activity. There is barely time to stop and say hello to people as you pass them by. People come second – work has to be the first priority.

Yet as we create our inner worlds of turmoil, our outer worlds merely reflect this back to us. So how do we stop the “mouse on a wheel syndrome”? Begin by first creating what I call small moments to “savour” (as a committed foodie what other word could I use?). And just what are these? These are the small everyday moments of joy that are all around us, if we could just take the moment or two that is needed to notice them.

They are the small everyday moments that remind us that we are a part of something much bigger than ourselves. We are all connected as a part of both humanity and a part of the world of plants animals and minerals. Taking the time to actively look for and “savour” these small moments remind us of the bigger picture of life.

Strangely enough this new focus, away from ourselves for even for a moment, allows us to re-center and rebalance ourselves. This rebalancing gives us the opportunity to look at our current interactions with a different – and generally more peaceful view.

So, if like many of us, you’re feeling the stress, do something different. Actively look for some small moment to savour. Then, and only then, do you return to your world of stress wearing your rose coloured spectacles.

You never know but your new view may offer you a different way to manage your world. with less stress…
